England Sporting Chance Women were crowned champions of the Dubai Rugby Exiles 7s after a thrilling 12-10 victory in the final against the Wooden Spoon team.

The England Sporting Chance side, playing in their first tournament of the season which also sees them compete in the Rugby World Cup 7s in March in Dubai also, swept aside Canada 12-5 in Saturday’s semi-final. Tries from Richmond’s Alice Richardson and Saracens’ Charlotte Barras sealed the win.

In the final, a converted try from Richmond’s Alice Richardson handed England a 7-5 lead at half-time, but a second try for Scotland’s Lissy Millard put the Wooden Spoon team in the lead with just four minutes left on the clock.

England held their nerve though and showed tremendous mental strength to sustain a barrage of attacks which finally saw Blaydon’s Danielle Waterman score in the final play at the game. Richardson didn’t convert but England sealed a magnificent 12-0 victory to lift the Dubai crown.

England Head Coach Simon Amor said: “This was an impressive win for us. It was certainly tense, and only a try in the last play of the game secured the win, but that sort of performance shows that these players know how to win games. They have mental toughness and that is exactly what is needed if we are going to contest the Rugby World Cup.

“From here the girls now have a rest period from 7s rugby, but come January it is all go. We will have several training sessions, before then going to San Diego and then Dubai again for the Rugby World Cup 7s.”

Sporting Chance Women kicked-off the Dubai Exiles Rugby 7s at a blistering pace on Thursday, and in turn booked their place in Friday’s quarter-finals.

The England Sporting Chance Foundation side recorded a 39-0 win over Aylesford Bulls and then an impressive 34-7 victory over the USA in the pool games.

In total the side ran in 14 tries, with Richmond’s Alice Richardson topping the scoring list with three touchdowns.

The England Sporting Chance Women now have one more pool fixture to play against a Wooden Spoon side on Friday, comprising of several international players, before contesting the quarterfinals on Friday also.

England Head Coach Simon Amor said: “This was a really good start to the tournament. I am very pleased, and overall the players demonstrated some first class rugby although we know we still have some fine tuning to do.

“We may already be in the quarterfinals but Friday’s Wooden Spoon game is going to be a tough fixture - they have some very good players in that team - and after that we will wait and see who we play in the quarterfinals.”

The Dubai 7s is England’s first test of the new season and acts as a vital warm-up tournament ahead of the 2009 iRB inaugural Women’s Rugby World Cup 7s, in March in Dubai also.

England head into this season on the back of a highly successful year in 2008, which saw them record a clean sweep of wins in the Amsterdam 7s, the London Emirates Airline 7s, the Home Nations Cup and the European 7s.
